*Behold I send you as sheep in the midst of wolves. Be ye therefore wise as serpents and simple as doves. But beware of men. For they will deliver you up in councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues. And you shall be brought before governors, and before kings for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the Gentiles: But when they shall deliver you up, take no thought how or what to speak: for it shall be given you in that hour what to speak. For it is not you that speak, but the Spirit of your Father that speaketh in you. The brother also shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the son: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and shall put them to death. And you shall be hated by all men for my name's sake: but he that shall persevere unto the end, he shall be saved. And when they shall persecute you in this city, flee into another. Amen I say to you, you shall not finish all the cities of Israel, till the Son of man come. Glory be to God forever.

هَا أَنَا أُرْسِلُكُمْ كَخِرَافٍ في وَسَطِ ذِئَابٍ فَكُونُوا حُكَمَاءَ كَالْحَيَّاتِ وَبُسَطَاءَ كَالْحَمَامِ. وَاحْذَرُوا مِنَ النَّاسِ؛ لأنهُمْ سَيُسَلِّمُونَكُمْ إلى مَجَالِسَ وفي مَجَامِعِهِمْ يَجْلِدُونَكُمْ. وَتُقَدَّمُونَ أَمَامَ مُلُوكٍ وَوُلاةٍ مِنْ أَجْلِي شَهَادَةً لَهُمْ وَلِلأُمَمِ. فَمَتَى أَسْلَمُوكُمْ فَلا تَهْتَمُّوا كَيْفَ أوْ بِمَا تَتَكَلَّمُونَ؛ لأنكُمْ تُعْطَوْنَ في تِلْكَ السَّاعَةِ مَا تَتَكَلَّمُونَ بِهِ. لأنكُمْ لَسْتُمْ أَنْتُمُ الْمُتَكَلِّمِينَ بَلْ رُوحُ أَبِيكُمْ الَّذِي يَتَكَلَّمُ فِيكُمْ. وَسَيُسَلِّمُ الأَخُ أَخَاهُ إلى الْمَوْتِ وَيُسَلِّمُ الأَبُ وَلَدَهُ، وَيَقُومُ الأَوْلادُ عَلَى آبَائِهِمْ وَيَقْتُلُونَهُمْ. وَتَكُونُونَ مُبْغَضِينَ مِنَ الْجَمِيعِ مِنْ أَجْلِ اسْمِي، وَالَّذِي يَصْبِرُ إلى الْمُنْتَهَى فَهذَا يَخْلُصُ. فَإذَا طَرَدُوكُم في هذِهِ الْمَدِينَةِ فَاهْرُبُوا إلى الأُخْرَى، فَإنِّي الْحَقَّ أَقُولُ لَكُمْ: لا تُتَمِّمُونَ جَوَلانِ مُدُنِ إسْرَائِيلَ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ ابْنُ الإنْسَانِ. وَالْمَجْدُ لِلَّهِ دَائِماً.

*But look to yourselves. For they shall deliver you up to councils, and in the synagogues you shall be beaten, and you shall stand before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony unto them. And unto all nations the gospel must first be preached. And when they shall lead you and deliver you up, be not thoughtful beforehand what you shall speak; but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye. For it is not you that speak, but the Holy Ghost. And the brother shall betray his brother unto death, and the father his son; and children shall rise up against the parents, and shall work their death. And you shall be hated by all men for my name's sake. But he that shall endure unto the end, he shall be saved. Glory be to God forever.

*For think diligently upon him that endured such opposition from sinners against himself; that you be not wearied, fainting in your minds. For you have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin: And you have forgotten the consolation, which speaketh to you, as unto children, saying: My son, neglect not the discipline of the Lord; neither be thou wearied whilst thou art rebuked by him. For whom the Lord loveth, he chastiseth; and he scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. Persevere under discipline. God dealeth with you as with his sons; for what son is there, whom the father doth not correct? But if you be without chastisement, whereof all are made partakers, then are you bastards, and not sons. Moreover we have had fathers of our flesh, for instructors, and we reverenced them: shall we not much more obey the Father of spirits, and live? And they indeed for a few days, according to their own pleasure, instructed us: but he, for our profit, that we might receive his sanctification. Now all chastisement for the present indeed seemeth not to bring with it joy, but sorrow: but afterwards it will yield, to them that are exercised by it, the most peaceable fruit of justice. Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, And make straight steps with your feet: that no one, halting, may go out of the way; but rather be healed. Follow peace with all men, and holiness: without which no man shall see God. The grace of God the Father be with you all. Amen.

فَتَفَكَّرُوا في الَّذِي احْتَمَلَ هكَذَا مِنَ الْخُطَاةِ الْمُقَاوِمِينَ لِنِفُوسِهِمْ وَحْدَهُمْ لِئَلاَّ تَكِلُّوا وَتَخُورُوا في نُفُوسِكُمْ. فَإنَّكُمْ لَمْ تَقِفُوا حَتَّى الدَّمِ مُجَاهِدِينَ ضِدَّ الْخَطِيَّةِ. وَقَدْ نَسِيتُمُ التَّعْلِيمَ الَّذِي خَاطَبَكُمْ بِهِ كَبَنِينَ: "يَا ابْنِي لا تَحْتَقِرْ تَأْدِيبَ الرَّبِّ وَلا تَخُرْ إذَا وَبَّخَكَ. لأنَّ الَّذِي يُحِبُّهُ الرَّبُّ يُؤَدِّبُهُ، وَيَضْرِبُ كُلَّ ابْنٍ يَقْبَلُهُ". فَاصْبِرُوا عَلَى التَّأْدِيبِ فَيُكَلِّمَكُمْ اللَّهُ كَالْبَنِينَ. فَأَيُّ ابْنٍ لا يُؤَدِّبهُ أَبوهُ؟ وَلكِنْ إنْ كُنْتُمْ بِلاَ تَأْدِيبٍ الْمُشْتَرِكِ فِيهِ الْجَمِيعُ فَأَنْتُمْ إذَاً نُغُولٌ لا بَنُونَ. ثُمَّ إنْ كَانَ لَنَا آبَاءُ جِسْدَانِيُّونَ مُؤَدِّبِينَ، وَكُنَّا نَسْتَحِي مِنْهُمْ، أَفَلا نَخْضَعُ بِالأَوْلَى لأَبِي الأَرْوَاحِ، فَنَحْيَا؟ لأنَّ أُولئِكَ أَدَّبونَا أَيَّامَاً قَلِيلَةً حَسَبَ إرادَتِهِمْ، وَأمَّا هذَا فَلِمَنْفَعَتِنَا بِالأَكْثَرِ، لِكَي نَنَالَ مِنْ قَدَاسَتِهِ. وَلكِنَّ كُلَّ تَأْدِيبٍ في وَقْتِهِ الْحَاضِرِ لا تَجِدُهُ لِلْفَرَحِ بَلْ لِلْحُزْنِ، وَأمَّا أَخِيراً فَيُعْطِي الَّذِينَ يَتَدَرَّبونَ بِهِ ثَمَرَ بِرٍّ لِلسَّلاَمِ. لِذلِكَ قَوِّمُوا الأَيَادِيَ الْمُسْتَرْخِيَةَ وَالأَرْجُلَ الْمُخَلَّعَةَ، وَاصْنَعُوا لأَرْجُلِكُمْ مَسَالِكَ مُسْتَقِيمَةً، لِكَيْ لا يَمِيلَ الأَعْرَجُ، بَلْ بِالْحَرِيِّ يَبْرَأُ. اسْعَوْا في أَثَرِ السَّلامِ مَعَ جَمِيعِ النَّاسِ، وَأيْضاً الطَّهَارَةِ التي بِدُونِهَا لَنْ يَرَى أَحَدٌ الرَّبَّ. نعمةُ اللَّهِ الآبِ فَلْتَحِلَّ عَلَى أرواحِنا يا آبائي وإخْوَتي. آمين.

*Dearly beloved, think not strange the burning heat which is to try you, as if some new thing happened to you; But if you partake of the sufferings of Christ, rejoice that when his glory shall be revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. If you be reproached for the name of Christ, you shall be blessed: for that which is of the honour, glory, and power of God, and that which is his Spirit, resteth upon you. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or a railer, or a coveter of other men's things. But if as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. For the time is, that judgment should begin at the house of God. And if first at us, what shall be the end of them that believe not the gospel of God? And if the just man shall scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? Wherefore let them also that suffer according to the will of God, commend their souls in good deeds to the faithful Creator. Do not love the world or the things in the world. The world passes away, and its desires; but he who does the will of God abides forever. Amen.

يَا أَحِبْائِي، لا تَسْتَغْرِبُوا الْبَلْوَى الْمُحْرِقَةَ التي تَحْدُث بَيْنَكُمْ، لأَجْلِ تَجرِبَتِكُمْ، كَأنهُ أَمْرٌ غَرِيبٌ قَدْ أَصَابَكُمْ، بَلْ كَمَا اشْتَرَكْتُمْ في أَوْجَاعِ الْمَسِيحِ، افْرَحُوا لِكَيْ تَفْرَحُوا بِابْتِهَاجٍ في اسْتِعْلاَنِ مَجْدِهِ أيْضاً. وَإنْ عُيِّرْتُمْ بِاسْمِ الْمَسِيحِ، فَطُوبَى لَكُمْ، لأنَّ ذَا الْمَجْدِ وَالْقُوَّةِ وَرُوحَ اللَّهِ يَحِلُّ عَلَيْكُمْ. فَلا يَتَألَّمْ أَحَدُكُمْ كَقَاتِلٍ أَوْ سَارِقٍ أَوْ فَاعِلِ شَرٍّ أَوْ كَنَاظِرٍ إلى مَا لَيْسَ لَهُ. وَلكِنْ إنْ كَانَ كَمَسِيحِيٍّ، فَلا يَخْجَلْ، بَلْ يُمَجِّدِ اللَّهَ بِهذَا الاسْمِ. لأنهُ الْوَقْتُ لابْتِدَاءِ الْقَضَاءِ مِنْ بَيْتِ اللَّهِ. فَإنْ كَانَ قَدْ ابْتَدَأَ أَوَّلاً مِنَّا، فَمَا هيَ عَاقِبَةُ الَّذِينَ لا يُطِيعُونَ إنْجِيلَ اللَّهِ؟ وَ"إنْ كَانَ الْبَارُّ بِالْجَهْدِ يَخْلُصُ، فَالْخَاطِئُ وَالْمُنَافِقُ أيْنَ يَظْهَرَانِ؟". فَإذاً، الَّذِينَ يَتَأَلَّمُونَ كَمَشِيئَةِ اللَّهِ، فَلْيَسْتَوْدِعُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ للَّهِ الْخَالِقِ الأَمِينِ، في عَمَلِ الْخَيْرِ. لا تُحِبُّوا العَالَمَ ولا الأشْيَاءَ التي في العَالَمِ، لأنَّ العَالَمَ يمْضِي وَشَهْوَتُهُ مَعَهُ، وأمَّا مَنْ يَعملُ مَشِيئَةَ اللهِ فإنه يَثْبُتُ إلى الأبدِ. آمين.

*The tabernacle of the testimony was with our fathers in the desert, as God ordained for them, speaking to Moses, that he should make it according to the form which he had seen. Which also our fathers receiving, brought in with Jesus, into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drove out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David. Who found grace before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob. But Solomon built him a house. Yet the most High dwelleth not in houses made by hands, as the prophet saith: Heaven is my throne, and the earth my footstool. What house will you build me? saith the Lord; or what is the place of my resting? Hath not my hand made all these things? You stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do you also. Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? And they have slain them who foretold of the coming of the Just One; of whom you have been now the betrayers and murderers: Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it. Now hearing these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed with their teeth at him. But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looking up steadfastly to heaven, saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God. And he said: Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. And they crying out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and with one accord ran violently upon him. And casting him forth without the city, they stoned him; and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man, whose name was Saul. And they stoned Stephen, invoking, and saying: Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And falling on his knees, he cried with a loud voice, saying: Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep in the Lord. And Saul was consenting to his death. Philip converts the Samaritans and baptizes the eunuch. And at that time there was raised a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all dispersed through the countries of Judea, and Samaria, except the apostles. The word of the Lord shall grow, multiply, be mighty, and be confirmed, in the holy Church of God. Amen.

"وَأمَّا خَيْمَةُ الشَّهَادَةِ فَكَانَتْ مَعَ آبَائِنَا في الْبَرِّيةِ، كَمَا أَمَرَ الَّذِي كَلَّمَ مُوسَى أنْ يَصْنَعَهَا عَلَى حَسَبِ الْمِثَالِ الَّذِي كَانَ قَدْ رَآهُ، هذِهِ التي قَدْ أَدْخَلَهَا آبَاؤُنَا مَعَهُمْ وَقَبِلُوهَا مَعَ يَشُوعَ في مُلْكِ الأُمَمِ الَّذِينَ طَرَدَهُمُ اللَّهُ مِنْ وَجْهِ آبَائِنَا، إلى أَيامِ دَاوُدَ الَّذِي وَجَدَ نِعْمَةً أمَامَ اللَّهِ، وَالْتَمَسَ أنْ يَصْنَعَ مَسْكَناً لإلَهِ يَعْقُوبَ. وَلكِنَّ سُلَيْمَانَ بَنَى لَهُ بَيْتاً. وَلكِنَّ الْعَلِيَّ لا يَسْكُنُ في مَصْنُوعَاتِ الأَيَادِي، كَمَا يَقُولُ النَّبِيُّ: السَّمَاءُ كُرْسِيٌّ لِي، وَالأَرْضُ مَوْطِئٌ لِقَدَمَيَّ. أَيُّ بَيْتٍ تَبْنُوهُ لِي؟ قَالَ الرَّبُّ، أَوْ أيٌّ هُوَ مَكَانُ رَاحَتِي؟ أَلَيْسَتْ يَدِي خَلَقَتْ هذِهِ الأَشْيَاءَ كُلَّهَا؟ يَا قُسَاةَ الرِّقَابِ، وَغَيْرَ الْمَخْتُونِينَ بِقُلُوبِهِمْ وَآذَانِهِمْ! أَنْتُمْ في كُلِّ حِينٍ تُقَاوِمُونَ الرُّوحَ القُدُسَ. كَمَا كَانَ آباؤُكُمْ كَذلِكَ أَنْتُمْ أيْضاً! مَنْ مِنَ الأنْبِيَاءِ لَمْ يَضْطَهِدْهُ آباؤُكُمْ؟ وَقَدْ قَتَلُوا الَّذِينَ سَبَقُوا فَأَنْذَرُوا بِمَجِيءِ الْبَارِّ، هذَا الَّذِي أَنْتُمْ الآنَ أَسْلَمْتُمُوهُ وَقَتَلْتُمُوهُ، وَأَنْتُمْ الذِينَ قَبِلْتُمُ الْنَّامُوسَ بِتَرْتِيبِ مَلاَئِكَةٍ وَلَمْ تَحْفَظُوهُ". فَلَمَّا سَمِعُوا هذَا احْتَدُّوا بِقَلْبِهِمْ وكانوا يَصِرُّونَ بِأَسْنَانِهِمْ عَلَيْهِ. وَأمَّا اسْتِفَانُوسُ فَشَخَصَ إلى السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ مُمْتَلِئٌ مِنَ الإيمَانِ وَالرُّوحِ القُدُسِ، فَرَأَى مَجْدَ اللَّهِ، وَيَسُوعَ قَائِمَاً عَنْ يَمِينِ اللَّهِ. فَقَالَ: "هَا أنا أَنْظُرُ السَّمَوَاتِ مَفْتُوحَةً، وَابْنَ الإنْسَانِ قَائِمَاً عَنْ يَمِينِ اللَّهِ". فَصَاحُوا جَمِيعُهُمْ بِصَوْتٍ عَظِيمٍ وَسَدُّوا آذَانَهُمْ، وَهَجَمُوا عَلَيْهِ جَمِيعُهُمْ بِنَهْضَةٍ، وَأَخْرَجُوهُ خَارجَ الْمَدِينَةِ وَرَجَمُوهُ. وَالشُّهُودُ وَضَعُوا ثِيَابَهُمْ عِنْدَ رِجْلَيْ شَابٍّ اسْمُهُ شَاوُلُ. وَرَجَمُوا اسْتِفَانُوسَ وَهُوَ يَدْعُو وَيَقُولُ: "أيهَا الرَّبُّ يَسُوعُ اقْبَلْ رُوحِي". ثُمَّ جَثَا عَلَى رُكْبَتَيْهِ وَصَرَخَ بِصَوْتٍ عَظِيمٍ قَائِلاً: "يَارَبُّ، لا تَحْسِبْ عَليهُمْ هذِهِ الْخَطِيَّةَ". وَإذْ قَالَ هذَا رَقَدَ. وَأمَّا شَاوُلُ فَكَانَ مُوَافِقاً عَلَى قَتْلِهِ. لَمْ تَزَلْ كَلِمَةُ الرَّبِّ تَنْمُو وتَكْثُرُ وتَعْتَزُّ وتَثْبُتُ، في بِيعَةِ اللَّهِ الْمُقَدَّسَةِ. آمين.

*And as he was saying these things to them, the Pharisees and the lawyers began violently to urge him, and to oppress his mouth about many things, Lying in wait for him, and seeking to catch something from his mouth, that they might accuse him. Christ warns us against hypocrisy, the fear of the world and covetousness. He admonishes all to watch. And when great multitudes stood about him, so that they trod one upon another, he began to say to his disciples: Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed: nor hidden, that shall not be known. For whatsoever things you have spoken in darkness, shall be published in the light: and that which you have spoken in the ear in the chambers, shall be preached on the housetops. And I say to you, my friends: Be not afraid of them who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will shew you whom you shall fear: fear ye him, who after he hath killed, hath power to cast into hell. Yea, I say to you, fear him. Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? Yea, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: you are of more value than many sparrows. And I say to you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God. But he that shall deny me before men, shall be denied before the angels of God. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but to him that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven. And when they shall bring you into the synagogues, and to magistrates and powers, be not solicitous how or what you shall answer, or what you shall say; For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what you must say. Glory be to God forever.

وَفِيمَا هُوَ يَقُولُ هذَا، ابْتَدَأَ الْكَتَبَةُ وَالْفَرِّيسِيُّونَ يَنْظُرُونَ رَدِيَّاً، وَيُكَلِّمُونَهُ في أُمُورٍ كَثِيرَةٍ، وَيَمْكُرُونَ لِيَصْطَادُوهُ بِكَلِمَةٍ مِنْ فَمِهِ. وَفي أثْنَاءِ ذلِكَ إذِ اجْتَمَعَ رَبَوَاتٌ كَثِيرَةٌ، حَتَّى دَاسَ بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضَاً، ابْتَدَأَ يَسُوعُ يَقُولُ لِتَلامِيذِهِ: "أَوَّلاً تَحَرَّزُوا لأَنْفُسِكُمْ مِنْ خَمِيرِ الْفَرِّيسِيِّينَ الَّذِي هُوَ رِيَاؤهُمْ، فَلَيْسَ شَيْءٌ مَكْتُومٌ إلاَّ وَسَيُظْهَرُ، وَلا خَفِيٌّ إلاَّ وَسَيُعْلَمُ. وَالَّذِي تَقُولُونَهُ في الظُّلْمَةِ سَيُسْمَعُ في النُّورِ، وَمَا قُلْتُمُوهُ في الأُذنِ في الْمَخَادِعِ يُنَادَى بِهِ عَلَى السُّطُوحِ. وَلكِنْ أَقُولُ لَكُمْ يَا أَصْدِقَائِي: لا تَخَافُوا مِنَ الَّذِينَ يَقْتُلُونَ جَسَدَكُمْ، وَبَعْدَ ذلِكَ لَيْسَ لَهُمْ أنْ يَفْعَلُوا شَيئاً أكْثَرَ. بَلْ أُعْلِمُكُمْ مِمَّنْ تَخَافُونَ: خَافُوا مِنَ الَّذِي بَعْدَمَا يَقْتُلُ، لَهُ سُلْطَانٌ أنْ يُلْقِيَ في جَهَنَّمَ. نَعَمْ، أَقُولُ لَكُمْ: مِنْ هذَا خَافُوا، أَلَيْسَتْ خَمْسَةُ عَصَافِيرَ تُبَاعُ بِفَلْسَيْنِ، وَوَاحِدٌ مِنْهَا لا يُنْسَى قُدَّامَ اللَّهِ؟ بَلْ شُعُورُ رُؤوسِكُمْ أيْضاً جَمِيعُهَا مُحْصَاةٌ. فَلا تَخَافُوا إذاً، أَنْتُمْ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ عَصَافِيرَ كَثِيرَةٍ، وَأَقُولُ لَكُمْ: إنَّ كُلَّ مَنْ يَعْتَرِفُ بِي قُدَّامَ النَّاسِ، يَعْتَرِفُ بِهِ ابْنُ الإنْسَانِ أيْضاً قُدَّامَ مَلائِكَةِ اللَّهِ. وَمَنْ أَنْكَرَنِي قُدَّامَ النَّاسِ، أُنْكِرُهُ أَنا أيْضاً قُدَّامَ مَلاَئِكَةِ اللَّهِ. وَكُلُّ مَنْ يَقُولُ كَلِمَةً عَلَى ابْنِ الإنْسَانِ يُغْفَرُ لَهُ، وَأمَّا مَنْ يُجَدِّفُ عَلَى الرُّوحِ القُدُسِ فَلَنْ يُغْفَرَ لَهُ. وَمَتَى قَدَّمُوكُمْ إلى الْمَجَامِعِ وَالرُّؤَسَاءِ وَالسَّلاَطِينِ فَلاَ تَهْتَمُّوا كَيْفَ أَوْ بِمَا تُجِيبُونَ أَوْ بِمَا تَقُولُونَ، لأنَّ الرُّوحَ القُدُسَ يُعَلِّمُكُمْ في تِلْكَ السَّاعَةِ مَا يَجِبُ أنْ تَقُولُوهُ". وَالْمَجْدُ لِلَّهِ دَائِماً.
